The Flip Slide of Konnektoren

So we looked at Co-ordinating Conjunctions. We’re done with Subordinating Conjunctions. (Check out Shivani’s blog. It’s been explained in such detail and with so many examples.)

Now let’s move to the “Others”.

So what’s so special about these “Others” Konnektoren? 

What sets them apart from the Co-ordinating and Subordinating ones?

They don’t really connect the sentences per se. They connect the content of these sentences. 

You can also call them Logical Connectors. 

Rules?

• Hauptsatz + Hauptsatz
• Connector will be a part of the 2^nd sentence
• The two sentences can be connected with a comma or a full stop. Doesn’t matter. 

Connectors are binding agents. 

So basically Subordinating, Coordinating as well as Others – all are binding agents. 

However, “Other Connectors” have their own uses individually as adverbs too. 

“Other Connectors” are actually Adverbien als Konnektoren. 

Let me explain how!

For example, let’s take the following sentences. 

Ich möchte in Ruhe sitzen. Ich gehe abends auf der Terrasse. 

How will we connect these sentences?

Ich möchte in Ruhe sitzen, ich gehe abends deshalb auf der Terrasse. 

Now put our 5-step process to use. 

Verb? gehen —- Valency I

Subjekt? Ich

Konjugation? Ich gehe…

Objekt? N/A

So what is the role of “abends”, “deshalb”, “auf der Terrasse”?

It’s Extra-Information, that is Angabe, which gives extra information about the verb (adverb).

“abends” –> temporal

“deshalb” –> kausal

“auf der Terrasse” –> lokal

“deshalb” is not only connecting the two sentences, but it is also giving extra information about the verb. 

Ergo, Adverbien als Konnektoren.

davor – before that

Heute Abend gehe ich zur Party. Ich muss davor meine Arbeit erledigen. 

danach – after that

Sie hat The Office stundenlang angesehen, danach hatte sie Kopfschmerzen offentsichtlich.

damals – at that time

FRIENDS hat von 1994 bis 2004 auf Sendung ausgestrahlt. Es war damals nicht so beliebt wie heutzutage.

dann – then

Erstmal liest sie ein Buch morgens, nur dann fährt sie zur Arbeit ab. 

vorher – before

Jetzt gehe ich aus. Ich muss vorher ein Sanitizer mitnehmen. 

früher – earlier

Brad Pitt ist ein Schauspieler, er war Autofahrer früher. 

deshalb – therefore

Die Miete der Wohnung ist zu hoch. Deshalb können wir hier nicht mehr leben. 

deswegen – therefore

Die Regierung hat die Ausgangssperre plötzlivh angekündigt. Sie mussten ihren Ausflug deswegen kündigen. 

darum – that’s why

Er wurde zum Präsident befördert. Er ist darum glücklich. 

aus diesem Grund – for this reason

Sein Zahn tut weh. Er kann nichts aus diesem Grund essen. 

trotzdem – nevertheless

Sie ist ins Fitnessstudio gegangen, trotzdem war sie müde.

auf diese Weise – in this way

Man muss mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln fahren oder eine Fahgemeinschaft bilden. Wir können die Umwelt auf diese Weise schützen. 

dort – there

Er hat sich in einem Buchclub angemeldet. Er hat seine Freundin dort getroffen. 

da – there

Du sollst zur Bibliothek gehen. Da kannst du besser konzentrieren. 

Phew! That took me soooo long. Well connecting the sentences is fairly okay. But thinking of a random sentence to use as an example is such a big deal. 

Well, that’s a wrap on the Others Konnektoren. 

However, we did have a long discussion about the process of learning and understanding a new word, text or concept. 

You gotta follow the pulse of learning style (no, it’s not a sales pitch) and zoom in and out.

When you come across a question, get curious and understand why it is the way it is. 

Having said that, imbibe the discipline in yourself to not go down a rabbit hole. If it’s taking too long, mark it as a query and get back to the text or move ahead with the concept or the next example. Get the query cleared by someone later.

(which actually wasn’t making any sense to me before and the words were just flying off the screen, but once Abhiraj took us step-by-step about how it actually should be read, it all makes sense now).
